Encinitas, California is a beachside city located in northern San Diego county, with 6 miles of beaches. It is home to Moonlight State Beach and Leucadia State Beach. The beaches are full of people in summer surfing, boogieboarding, swimming, volleyball, and other activities. In July and August Moonlight Beach hosts Concerts by the Sea. Restaurants Two local restaurants I recommend are: La Especial Norte (Mexican), 664 N. Coast Hwy. 101, Encinitas, 942-1040 (often crowded in the evening, arrive early), and Big Jim's BBQ, southern style, 190 N. Coast Highway 101, 635-1166.

Cardiff-by-the-Sea has some good seafood and other restaurants on Old Highway 101 at the southern end near San Elijo Lagoon.

Best Places to Stay By the beach, of course. Look for places located on the near the old 101 Coast Highway or at least west of I-5.
